Empowering Voices: Insights and Lessons from the Climate Justice Camp
The Climate Justice Camp, a remarkable gathering that took place from August 28 to September 2, 2023, transcended mere statistics. With 450 participants, over 70% female, over 70% under 30, and 97% from the 'Global South,' the camp was not just a numerical success but a beautiful, challenging, and intersectional reality. This strategic space was meticulously crafted for and by young climate activists, primarily from the most affected regions often referred to as the 'global south.'
Wanjiru Margaret, Oxfam International’s digital strategist, and Isabel Crabtree-Condor, Oxfam Novib influencing advisor, proudly supported the camp as an official partner, recognizing the importance of such spaces in empowering and connecting young climate activists globally.
During the six days of the camp, rich in challenges, stories, and collaborations, Oxfam Novib aimed to forge alliances, build relationships, and map supportive networks for advocates, organizers, and activists. The mission was to align actions towards, during, and after COP28, contributing to a broader strategy of Sharing and Shifting Power in the Global Influencing Strategy on Climate Justice.
The camp, birthplace of creative actions like Flood the COP during COP27, operated as a joint effort by young climate activists, with Greenpeace Roots as the core team and collaboration from various partners and allies. The foundation of Care and Creativity allowed for a nurturing environment that facilitated meaningful connections and collaborations.
Key takeaways from interactions with young activists included their intersectional approach to climate injustice, emphasizing the need for an intentional "do no harm" funding approach. The importance of reflecting on power dynamics, avoiding co-optation, and supporting unique spaces like the Climate Justice Camp was underscored. Collaboration with allies, resource pooling, and addressing livelihood challenges for activists were highlighted as crucial elements.
The lessons learned from these young activists will shape future collaborations and strategies, contributing to a more equitable and impactful fight for climate justice.
