Yellow Star: Florence's Recipe for Change
"Yellow Star emerged as my response to the heart-wrenching food poverty and malnutrition plaguing Ugandan families, witnessed during my two-decade career as a social worker. The urgent need for accessible, nutritious meals fueled my determination and gave birth to this enterprise in 1997," shared Florence Okot, founder of Yellow Star, with unwavering passion.
Yellow Star's product range mirrors the diversity of their vision. Florence highlighted, "From cereals and grains, we craft nourishing flour for porridge, honey, and peanut butter. Our product variety is designed to cater to every stratum of society, ensuring that everyone is embraced within our value chain."

“At Yellow Star, our core values revolve around building robust relationships, whether with our raw material suppliers or cherished customers. We've established a resilient supply chain rooted in high-quality raw materials thoughtfully sourced from formerly internally displaced women in Northern Uganda,” she added.
Through mentorship and empowerment initiatives encompassing financial literacy and agribusiness skills, Yellow Star has enabled these women to thrive in post-harvest handling and sustainable income-generating ventures. “Our mission transcends profit; we are steadfast in making a meaningful impact on the lives of these resilient women, providing both market assurance and a pathway to self-reliance,” Florence said.
“The grant Yellow Star secured from the Oxfam Super Star competition in 2022 empowered us to train an additional 20 women from Northern Uganda. We've also opened two accessible shops, allowing these women not only to access our products but also to increase their income by selling them,” Florence said.
For me, Yellow Star represents hope and change. Twenty-six years on, our fight against food poverty and malnutrition is yielding results. Our resilient supply chain built with care, and the women we have empowered speak of a brighter future.
