Towards a Worldwide Influencing Network
Oxfam Novib and SOMO share the vision that we can achieve to live in a just world without poverty. To tackle the injustices that cause and perpetuate poverty, we are working through a partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to make the world safer and fairer for everyone.
Learn about this program's impact through the Impact Talk Podcast from Oxfam Novib. In this series we talk with partners and colleagues from around the world about the impacts and lessons from the last five years. The focus is on raising the voices of citizens on critical topics like conflict and security, the right to food, and securing the financingneeded for development.

A world in which all people, including those who are often not included in decision-making, can play an active role in building an equitable world where they can realize their basic rights: their right to food; the right to live in a democratic society with a fair distribution of public resources; and the right to live in peace and security.
The Strategic Partnership ‘Towards a Worldwide Influencing Network’ works to empower people, develop capacity of organizations and alliances in a worldwide network to influence governments and private sector parties to improve policies and practices for people living in poverty and injustice. Together with partners we work on increasing civic space in three thematic areas: Right to Food, Finance for Development, and Conflict and Fragility.
The partnership is an agreement of an alliance between Oxfam Novib and SOMO with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Oxfam Novib and SOMO’s aim is to empower groups that risk facing violence, discrimination and marginalisation. While doing so, we include the needs and interests of women by including a gender justice analysis to inform the choice of our interventions and the organisations we want to work with. Knowing that our work on lobby and advocacy must respond to the realities of the countries and regions we work in, we also work across our thematic areas on civic space and conflict sensitivity that affect the context within which we operate.
Through Impact, Measurement and Knowledge we are continuously monitoring and evaluating our work, in order to continue and improve our work with our partners. This enables us to capture results about policy changes and increased influencing capacities of partners. Building on evaluation and new insights, we adapt projects accordingly.
In 2016 the Strategic Partnership took off in 17 countries in Asia and Africa, where we entered into collaboration with 80 civil society organizations, networks and alliances. Since the beginning of 2018, this number has exceeded over 125 civil society organizations, networks and alliances. We aim to strengthen their local influencing capacities and link these to Oxfam’s global campaigns. Our ambition is to link local to global issues and move towards a truly Worldwide Influencing Network.

CIVIC SPACE
Over the last years we have observed a global trend where civil society is faced with new restrictions, affecting their ability to voice the ideas and concerns of citizens. We also noted the impact on our work in the strategic partnership and on the capacity to influence the public and private sector with our partners. Civic space is vital for the existence of a vibrant and active civic society that is crucial for democratic processes. As Oxfam Novib we want to give a voice to those who are not heard
We work on Civic Space through:
RIGHT TO FOOD
The world produces sufficient food to feed everyone and yet 820 million women, men and children are undernourished. This gross injustice is systemic: inherent to our global food system. The Right to Food program fights these injustices in 8 countries, with 33 partners, to defeat poverty.
We work on Right to Food through:
- GROW
- Sowing Diversity=Harvesting Security
- Access to Land, Inclusive Value Chains and Empowerment (ALIVE)

FINANCE FOR DEVELOPMENT
The rapid rise of extreme economic inequality is significantly hindering the fight against poverty. Oxfam Novib and SOMO see fiscal justice as central to the fight against economic inequality. Within this program we address these injustices to defeat poverty.
We work on Finance for Development through:
CONFLICT AND FRAGILITY
In our vision for a just world without poverty, people can participate fully and influence the decisions that affect their lives. Conflict obstructs development and is a key driver of humanitarian need. Oxfam Novib and SOMO address the root causes of conflict so that people find peaceful solutions and transform their lives.
